Federer may face Nadal in the quarter final
The draw saw second seed Federer and eighth seed Nadal placed in the same quarter with third seed Murray awaiting the winner
if the seedings pan out. Murray may first have to battle past US Open champion Marin Cilic.
The British number one will open his campaign against either Viktor Troicki or wild card Mardy Fish, the American who is playing in the penultimate tournament of his career. Grigor Dimitrov is the first seed Murray could face – they will meet in the last 16 if both progress that far.
Federer will start against either Roberto Bautista Agut or Pablo Cuevas, while Nadal’s opening foe will be either Jeremy Chardy, who has played so well in Montreal this week, or recent Newport winner Rajeev Ram.
A Federer v Nadal clash would be their 34th but first since January 2014 when the Spaniard won their Australian Open semi-final.
In the top half of the draw, Novak Djokovic is seeded to face Stan Wawrinka, the man who beat him in the French Open final in June, in the last eight. Kei Nishikori is seeded to meet the winner, although he has Tomas Berdych in his quarter.
Djokovic, who will be seeking to win the one Masters 1000 title he has yet to claim in his career, has a potentially tricky path to the latter stages though.
The big-serving Gilles Muller is a possible first opponent – the Luxembourg star faces a qualifier in round one – while Jo-Wilfried Tsonga could follow.
